Italian Montepulciano grape juice produces a fruity, dry wine with soft tannin and low to moderate acidity. It makes a deep ruby red wine that is clear and brilliant with purplish shades, and can carry a fairly intense nose of strawberry and ripe plum with flavors of cherry, peach and plum.
A popular blending partner is Sangiovese, which provides high acidity and fine structural tannin. Montepulciano in turn contributes deep, inky color, round plum fruit and a softer palate weight that balances the rustic edge of Sangiovese.
Montepulciano pairs with a wide variety of food, most notably baked lasagna.
