Italian Merlot grape juice produces a highly versatile wine, balancing fruitiness against low to medium tannin, with a characteristically round and velvety mouthfeel. Notes are described as black cherry, ripe plum and currant.

One of the most popular varietals in the U.S., Merlot carries higher sugar content and lower malic acid and tannin than Cabernet Sauvignon, which is what makes the two an ideal blend. Cabernet Franc, Malbec and Petit Verdot are other common blending partners.

The wine pairs best with roasted poultry, lean red meats and mushroom based dishes.
