Barbera is a food friendly wine that goes well with crusty Italian bread, salad, aged cheese, hearty pasta, mushrooms, cured meat and sausage.
The grape is believed to have originated in the hills of Monferrato in central Piemonte and has been known since the thirteenth century. Italian immigrants brought Barbera to Lodi and the Central Valley of California, where the majority of the grape is now grown. That hot climate yields high volumes traditionally used for blending into generic red wines or rich, fruit forward varietals.
