California Tempranillo grape juice produces a medium to full bodied red with cherry fruit, a savory leather note and moderate tannin. The grape is the backbone of Rioja.
Tempranillo takes oak aging well, which is where the vanilla and warm spice character of a traditional Rioja comes from. Natural acidity runs low, so it is often blended with Grenache, Carignane or Graciano.
