California Petite Sirah grape juice produces a wine with deep color, high tannin and rich fruit flavors. Flavors can be of dark fruits like blackberry, blueberry and plum, often accompanied by notes of black pepper, dark chocolate, clove and licorice. High tannin and medium to high acidity give it excellent aging potential and a heavy mouthfeel.
Petite Sirah is primarily used in blending to provide intense dark color, firm tannin structure and a bold backbone of dark fruit flavors. Winemakers most commonly blend it into Zinfandel and Syrah, using 5 to 25 percent Petite Sirah, to add longevity and structural weight to softer, jammier wines.
